CORE Philly

CORE Philly  (http://www.corephilly.org ) is a nonprofit initiative designed to unite the Philadelphia community around the goal of ensuring that all our children have access to college. This is important not only for high school students, but for the city and region as a whole. Easing the pathway from high school to college will help make a Philadelphia more competitive and desirable place to live, work and raise a family. CORE Philly was formed in September 2003 under the leadership of Congressman Chaka Fattah in collaboration with Philadelphia Mayor John Street, School District CEO Paul Vallas and the unanimous support of both the Philadelphia City Council and Philadelphia School Reform Commission. To fund the initiative, the City of Philadelphia committed $4 million each year for the first four years, and the School District committed $6 million per year.

Re: CORE Philly

Another organization with a similar mission is Philadelphia Futures. Phila. Futures is a nonprofit organization that provides promising, urban high school students with the tools they need to achieve their dream of a college education. The organization’s centerpiece program, Sponsor-A-Scholar, helps students from economically disadvantaged families to succeed in high school, and to pursue and complete higher education, by providing one-on-one mentoring; financial incentives; and a year-round curriculum of academic skill building and enrichment, including after-school classes, college guidance activities and cultural opportunities. Since its inception in 1989, Philadelphia Futures has helped thousands of students to build a better future. To learn more visit: www.philadelphiafutures.org

Re: CORE Philly

Check out Project Grad -helping 121,000 disadvantaged students graduate from high school and get into college.  But that number is not big enough.  Helping children from low income families earn their high school diploma is not charity.  It is a way to ensure the future of our communities.  Project GRAD® has a ten-year track record of successfully helping at risk students make it through K-12 school systems and graduate college.  Project GRAD works.  We have the evidence.  In our first group of GRAD schools, we increased the number of students attending college by 400%.  When you support Project GRAD, everyone grows.
