Southern Education Foundation’s
(SEF) origins go back to 1867 with the establishment of the Peabody Education
Fund. In later years, other education funds focusing on the South also were
established: in 1882 the John F. Slater Fund; in 1907 the Jeanes Fund; and in
1936 the Virginia Randolph Fund. These four funds merged in 1937 to form the
Southern Education Foundation (SEF).
SEF provides an online interactive
timeline which illustrates a chronology of major events and developments in
Southern education since the Civil War. It also offers informative written,
audio and video clips to help interpret each historical era.
