I did bad in high school! Transfer?

I didn't do so good in high school.  I got a 3.2 GPA (3.3 weighted) and I was top 40% in my class.  I got a 31 on the ACT (the only thing I'm proud of).

I REALLY want to go to a top ranked school.  Here's my list of favorites that I'd like to go to... USC, UCLA, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown, or a school similar or at their caliber I would consider.  Is there any way I can get into one of these if I get amazing grades in college and then transfer?  I just started college, and I'm prepared to work extremely hard and get a very high GPA.  I know that if I work really hard, I definitely could get great grades and be willing to take part in many extracurrics n' such.                        What would I have to do?  Apply after how long?  Advice?  Personal experiences?

Would it be possible for me to transfer to one of these schools?  Thanks so much!

Re: I did bad in high school! Transfer?
Don’t be shy about contacting the transfer and admissions counselors at each of the schools you are hoping to attend.  Openly discuss your strategy and request tips for positioning yourself as a strong transfer candidate.  If it is not posted on their website request the statistics for transfer applications and transfer admits to get a realistic idea of your chances for transfer admission at these competitive schools.

Here is a link to a specific transfer scholarship program The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program– for community college students (be advised that you must be nominated for this program.)

And here is a story for inspiration:

You may also consider asking the schools you are interested in if they have transfer agreements (also known as articulation agreements) with specific schools.  In these arrangements student agree to take a specific set of courses and maintain a particular GPA with assurance that their course work from the sending school will transfer and apply towards graduation at the receiving school.

Best wishes on your college dreams and goals. Be sure to look at the articles and tips on the www.collegetransfer.net website to avoid common transfer pitfalls.  You may also want to check out the National Articulation and Transfer Network (NATN) website: http://www.natn.org/plan.aspx?elid=1  for basic transfer related information.

Re: I did bad in high school! Transfer?
I was asked to leave my high school sophomore year because I had depression and was missing so many days of school. I got my diploma through independent study. I think my GPA was around a 2.2. I just got accepted to Pitzer--one of the claremont colleges--which are considered the Ivies of the west coast. I am taking the admissions test to get into Columbia University. Apparently, once you have proven yourself in college, they do not care about your high school records. I have a 32 semester units of a 4.0 in the honors program. Just work hard, get involved in your community, and you will be fine. I also think my teacher recommendations helped a lot--friendships with teachers are priceless. I applied to transfer with sophomore status, but most people do it for junior status, but it can never hurt to apply, and some private colleges want you to get into thier program sooner rather than later. Just email that admissions department and ask them how to get in. Colleges love transfers because, on average, they have more life experience than high school grads. Hope that gives you some inspiration.
