According
to a press release today from the PA Department of Education, Westmoreland County
Community College will be
the first institution to receive a grant through the state’s newly established
Technical College Program.
WCCC will receive a $379,980 grant, which includes $199,980 for equipment and
$180,000 for faculty and other operating costs, to set up an electrical and
electronic engineering technician program in Fayette County
this fall.
Pennsylvania workers need access to postsecondary education and
training so they can compete in the high-skills economy, Zahorchak said, but
many Pennsylvanians live in places without access to a community college or
other quality, affordable institutions where they can receive an associate
degree or industry certificate.
“These
regions risk being left behind in today’s globally competitive market,” the
secretary said. “We can overcome this potential weakness by bolstering Pennsylvania’s regional
workforce training through this grant initiative.”
